one of my hardest struggles in my efforts to keep my flat clean is the neverending battle with animal hair (i’m loosing). so everything has a slipcover that gets a thorough shake and wash every once in a while.
this is one of my last endeavors: a new slipcover for my dog’s armchair (yes it’s hers, yes the cat’s sitting in it, he’s cocky like that)
it involved:

a piece of an old blanket (underneath the denim fabric)

couple of old jeans

a piece of this beige fabric i have no idea where it came from

several shoelaces

couple of pieces of velcro from my partners old pair of work pants

couple of old backpack …emmm…belts /straps (no idea what’s it called)

and a piece of cheap knit fabric i used to use as a curtain some years ago to go underneath the chair and tighten and pull on the front part of the slipcover

nothing bought new

and i know the sewing isn’t too neat and precise
but it works, and i made a special effort to make it as fast as i can to make more time for other life commitments 🙂

all in all really happy with it

untill next time and take care

hello!!!  long time no see!!  i missed u!
how’s life treating u all? i’m pretty fine thanks, nothing much to complain about.

been stitching and sewing some gifts to some of my pregnant friends. and also altering loads of second hand bought clothes.
cause i only shop in thrift/second hand stores. cause it’s cheap. it doesn’t hurt that it’s more eco-friendly. but mostly it’s cheap.

here’s some of the baby rattles and other stuff i made lately. all from upcycled clothes/fabrics

if u shake them they make a noise of wooden beads hitting the tiny plastic box from inside. was a little worried that the noise is annoying but my partner says it’s ok….

aaaaaand this gift kit that took me like 2 months to complete. it is really more complicated to make than it looks. also i shot myself in the leg multiple times in the process while making these little puffs 4 the baby rag

other than that i’ve been vigorously trying to be a better cook mostly for my hard working partner’s sake. not working out so well just yet. but it will, it will in the end……   🙂   i keep telling myself i have no choice, we have to eat, right? so we might as well eat something tasty and healthy….   the fact that we have an absolute opposite taste in food complicates it a bit though…. one of the few things we both love is fried or boiled potatoes. russians, right?  although technically he is a former ukranian and i am tatar and there’s a difference. but we won’t get into that right now.
also been up to some other stuff which i tell u all about in the posts to come.

happy and fuitful spring cleaning to you all people!

p.s   on a random note, one of the admittedly few good things my life experience tought me it that u never know who has an unexpected gift 4 u.  like the most unlikely people been sharing some interesting recepies with me, and other life advices.  u just have to put some thought into picking the good ones… 🙂

p.p.s.  my word of the day is integrity. picked it from ‘true detective’ . and no, i don’t have it.  but i wish i did.

so i’ve been feeling a little under motivated and all in all in different levels of blah lately, what with all the latest events in kiev, ukraine where my partner’s relatives live

but! i made this little collage as a gift to my partner’s semi-trailer-driver friend who is also a passionate jeep trips enthusiast.

most of my partner’s buddies are semi trailer drivers.  so if for some reason u r guessing what he does for a living – u guessed it right.

u can’t imagine how much russian cursing i hear when he takes a work related call from his colleagues. but that’s ok. as long as u don’t tell my dad  (a children poet) nothing about it.  🙂

IMG_0899

it’s a view from a wind shield of a car. used old map, postcards, some fabric scraps. and it looks prettier in real life.

and then i made this little flower brooch for a colleague at work, an older eccentric Romanian lady notorious for telling dirty jokes. not that i’m a fan. hearing a dirty joke from an elderly woman brings a whole new level of weirdness to it, i think.

so she always wears this beanie (indoors) and i thought it was missing a little embellishment.

IMG_5028

she seemed pretty happy with the brooch, kissed me on both cheeks and put it on her beanie right away where it proudly stayed all day. 🙂

and lastly as it happens i might be the only one who knows how to tie a tie at my department (props and costumes) at work (local theatre)

as u all know (lol) the dress code concept is almost nonexistent in my part of the globe. white collar job people rarely actually wear white collars. or ties. or long pants for that matter. so when i was asked if i knew how to tie a tie i astonished myself and the company present and…tied a tie! last time i did it was maybe 20 years ago in my early teens.

i guess, u just never know when and which seemingly useless knowledge could be helpful in life. or something.

i leave u with this ‘naglaya morda’ (‘brazen face’) as we call him who deliberately chooses wrong times and places to take his nap

storytime

‘storytime’

here’s another little drawing

many many happy hours spent like this back in the day

and here’s my last crafting endeavour:

bear-headed trash bin slipcover

bear-headed trash bin slipcover

it’s a trash bin slipcover, matching our bathroom tiles color

what i used:

shabby chrome trash bin, courtesy of our apartment previous dwellers

embroidery thread, most likely courtesy of my grandmother whom i never met, she passed away before i was born

baby rag with bear head , courtesy of some charity shop, bought to go under the cat’s and dog’s bowls to absorb some of the spilled water. i cut off the bear head and just kept it for no good reason at the time

and an odd shirt of an indefinable style, courtesy of my partner, bought  somewhere in mid 90’s.

when asked if he’ll ever gonna wear the shirt few years ago ( i could see it just hung there in the cupboard untouched for a decade or so) the answer was ”i wear it when i have a flue”.   and, surprise! he never did although the opportunity presented itself once or twice.

now every time i’m in the bathroom i see the bin and i smile. don’t need too much to cheer me up really.

and lastly here’s a couple of funtime ideas for you and one of an awesome naptime!

take care

and happy holidays to you all

p.s.  well, again, it’s not related to anything but have u heard about linda tirado ? while she is truly remarkable i don’t get why some commenters are so negative about her. thought it’s a russian-jealousy-of-the-underprivileged thing to get all upset when someone does something right for himself. i guess it’s just human nature although i’d rather prefer it was geografically/historically explainable…..

only one serious rain this year until now. not good.

one red furred dog sneaked into my dreams again. and into my bed. and into my drawing.

my partner took a football into his face again during his weekly football game with his buddies. so it’s his sick day from work today.

having no body fat i got very cold visiting in geneva this last weekend. kept wrapping up in my scarf trying to make it go up to my eyes. this resulted in making a re/upcycled neck warmer out of couple of fleece scraps later at home. still doubtful about that fringe part. and not too happy with the colors. but i used, as i always try to, whatever i already had in my scrap stash, cause, as they say in russian, economy must be economical. let me go further and paraphrase this, saying, recycling must be…um…recycling?

that’s all very nice and all, the only problem being i’ll only get to use the neck warmer …next year visiting in colder countries. yeah, well…what can you do about it, right?

on a somewhat unrelated note: unfortunately for me i already made it neck deep into the feel-good-only books/films phase…a bit too early in my life, i think. if you’r in that phase, and a woman, and a smart one (lol) or consider yourself as such, you know how hard it is to find a decent dramedy. yesterday movie gods smiled at me and i got to watch “liberal arts”. it comes from a surprising writer, surprising director, um…not so surprising lead, and ,as your might have rightfully guessed, is surprisingly good.

note: all opinions mine, all very subjective

p.s. as i was waiting in line to pay in the supermarket the other day, an older man asked me to pass him a plastic bag. as i gave him the bag i heard ,and i quote, “i thank you in the name of barak obama”

myself and the woman behind me smiled while the cashier was less appreciative.  she rolled her eyes and murmured something about people being bored.

my unspoken advice to the if goofy but well meaning witty man is maybe to try this with a bit more receptive audience next time. after all most of the customers in this particular store don’t speak hebrew (south tel aviv)

hope the one whose name was mentioned in vain didn’t get a sudden hiccup attack…  (u know, that superstition about hiccups )

take care
and
please please please
have a good life

another big crafting project out of my system. what a relief!

it lives on a wall in my crafting/drawing/everything room and i love it.

all materials recycled (good job, aida. and also, you really have loads of unnecessary crap at your home, don’t you? )

the letters are pinned to the board (that has a piece of an old blanket stitched to it) and having premade a bunch of letters already, i can easily change the words whenever i feel like it.

next week i think i’m going to go with the word “jump”. maybe an exclamation mark will go nicely with it

also maybe i should change the embroidery thread on the lighter letters to a darker one, to make the pop up a little more

some of the stuff used in this has a history, like the background fabric rectangle is maybe 40 years old, i dug it up at my parent’s this summer in a far away town of Kazan.

anyhow, i picked this line from a tv show.

it represents an approach for life  that i understand i have no choice but fully embrace ASAP.  well, i embraced it in my romantic relationship alright.  hope i’m not overdoing it.

now, when i see such positive thinking projects all over the blogland, the russian in me awakens and my lips contort involuntarily in a small patronising smile
but! i’ve lived long enough and by this point know better than this. so i’m joining in with mr. woody allen and say: whatever works, people, whatever works!

p.s  today’s middle eastern wabi sabi photo:

israel in all it’s glorious..um.. glory, right?

take care
